John 8:1-12 tells a powerful story of God’s compassion and forgiveness. There was a woman who was caught in adultery when the law clearly stated that “If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbour, both the adulterer and the adulteress, shall be stoned to death.” So the authorities brought the woman to Jesus in order to force him to a test regarding the law. According to John 8:7:11, that scene went something like this: When they persisted in questioning Him, He straightened up and said, “He who is without [any] sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Then He stooped down again and started writing on the ground. 9 They listened [to His reply], and they began to go out one by one, starting with the oldest ones, until He was left alone, with the woman [standing there before Him] in the centre of the court. 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She answered, “No one, Lord!” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go. From now on sin no more.”]
What a powerful story! There is no one to accuse her, not even Jesus. And I hope we’re all moved by what this act of love means for us as well. We can identify with this woman in some ways, can’t we? Because here is a person who has sinned, made mistakes, is frightened and feels ashamed. She needs mercy just like us and Jesus pours out his grace upon her, offers her forgiveness, and gives her a second chance at life. She walks away filled with that grace. Can you imagine Jesus watching her, nodding his head, smiling, then, as John writes, telling the people in the crowd, “I am the light of the world and whoever follows me will never walk in darkness (again).” And the good news is, that same promise, “whoever follows me, will never walk in darkness again,” is meant for you and me.
When we encounter Jesus we leave His presence with freedom from the things that hold us in bondage. This woman left the presence of God free from sexual sin, guilt and shame. For the first time in a long while, she felt free.
Time and time again we will fall short but the bible gives us hope and assurance. God says, “I am he who blots out your transgressions and remembers your sin no more.” And, the Apostle John writes, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
When you come to God in repentance, looking for a second chance, no matter what mistakes you have made you come to a God who assures you. His word says, “neither do I condemn you.” Don’t worry about the people who point fingers. We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We all need God’s forgiveness. We all need to be restored by Him. So my dear friend, do not be afraid to return to God. What’s the worse that could happen? You being set free?
Approach the throne of grace boldly today knowing that you will meet the one who forgives and gives freedom.
