Are you equipped to love a Man of God

A “Man of God” seems to be what all the Godly women are praying for these days. But do we truly understand who a Man of God is? Or is it just another term we use for the sake of it? Do we understand what it takes to stand by a Man of God in love and marriage? I’m not going to say that the Holy Spirit asked me this question but the thought just came to me: “Are you equipped to love a Man of God?” This article is for me just as it is for you.

I headed straight to google (Google is one of my best friends y’all). I began to search for what it truly means to be a Man of God. Who were considered as Men of God in the bible? What were the journeys of these men like? I went on to wonder if, as women, what characteristics would we need to possess to stand firmly with Men of God in marriage?

Who is a Man of God?

1 Timothy 6:11-12 King James Version (KJV)

11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

The calling to serve God is a calling to a position of special honour. “Man of God” is the description given to a man who follows God in every way, who obeys His commands with joy, who does not live for the things of this life but for the things of eternity, who willingly serves his God in giving freely of all his resources yet gladly suffers as a consequence of his faith*.

I had to hear what a few Christian Men had to say:

Johnathan Fletcher says: “A man of God is described in many areas of the Bible. However, I’m keen to this particular scripture because of the way in which Paul admonished Timothy in 1 Tim 6. The whole essence of the scripture says to me that being a man of God starts in your mind FIRST. You could be dripping in fire from God Himself but if your mind is not renewed and you’re not following after God then you’ll be in some deep waters. Many people think that being a true man of God lies in your gifting and/or your abilities but that is far from the truth. Being a good preacher, teacher, musician or leader does not make you a man of God. The very preposition – “of” – suggests that the man has a RELATIONSHIP with God.”

Are you equipped?

The points that stood out to me in the descriptions given for a “Man of God” were:

  • He must be content in Godliness; satisfied in being clothed and fed
  • He must not live for the things of this life but for the things of eternity
  • He must willingly serve his God in giving freely of all his resources yet gladly suffers as a consequence of his faith

Let’s look at these three points with 21st century vision shall we? While assessing if, as women, we can take on the role of loving these men.

Point 1:

He must be content in Godliness; satisfied in being clothed and fed

Translation: God should be enough for him. He should be able to understand and be at peace with God providing his bare essentials. He should know that although according to social media, his friends’ accomplishments or cable TV he has nothing; God supplies all his needs. Philippians 4:19

Question:
Will I be able to love a Man who seems unambitious and safe in a world where you have to ‘go hard or go home’?  Will I be able to be content with what God sees as “enough” for us? Frequent fine dining experiences may be a want for us while God supplies needs; will I be happy with that?

Point 2:

He must not live for the things of this life but for the things of eternity

Translation: He will be so heaven focused that he will oftentimes opt to have quiet time with God instead of alone time with you. He may cut your conversation short to make use of an opportunity to evangelize.

Question: Will I be able to put my needs aside when my husband needs to be in solitude with God? This may mean sleeping alone some nights or not getting the attention you may need at a given moment.

Point 3:

He must willingly serve his God in giving freely of all his resources yet gladly suffers as a consequence of his faith

Translation: He will be selfless; selfless to a fault at times. Money will be given away and the clothes off his back will be gone too. He is that kind. He will give his last and do without many times.

Question: Will I be able to live with this level of selflessness? What if we’re saving for a grand vacation and God tells him to give all that money away? Will I be mature enough to not doubt God or be upset about the situation?

My Jamaican readers must be saying:

Is wa kin a ooman dis? Shi nuh kno God?

I realized while typing those points that it will take a solid Woman of God to love a “Man of God.”

Qualities of a Woman of God

A woman of God must:

  • Trust God. Can you remember what happened when Sarah took it upon herself to help God fulfill the promise of giving her a child?
  • Have unwavering faith. Remember Ruth? Ruth remained faithful to God when reality looked dim. She trusted God that there was a future ahead for her.
  • Be obedient. Eve thought it was a good idea to disobey God’s command. How did that turn out?

To love a Man of God, you have to be equipped as a Woman of God. And the reality is that – along with the aforementioned characteristics – women of God must be submissive. Men of God – as seen in the bible – are called to lead in demanding capacities. They have a close-knit relationship with God. This means that God is giving them inside information you know nothing about. Total submission is required.

Are you equipped?

God Bless You
