Be silent in the presence of the Lord

Sometimes to hear God, we have to get really quiet. We have to settle down outside and inside too. Oftentimes our insides are too noisy and our surroundings are too distracting. We cry out, “God, I can’t hear you.” When God is saying, “My child, settle down.”

We can hear the small still voice we so desperately want to hear because our lives are too noisy. Our daily routines and the voices of the people around us are shouting above the voice of God. We can’t hear the small still voice because we are always talking, talking, talking. In order to hear, we have to be quiet.

Imagine you have a meeting with a friend every day at one o’clock p.m. to talk through some issues you’re having. Before you can even get a word or two out, they start talking. They talk for the enter meeting, and then at the end, you both just leave. How would you feel? Wouldn’t you give up trying to speak anymore?

Now think about how God feels when you sit to meet with him, but you are the one doing all the talking. Think about how He feels when your life gets so busy and noisy to the point where you can no longer hear him. Wouldn’t want God to give up trying to speak to you anymore?

Be still before the Lord God Almighty. Allow your soul to wait patiently in silence for Him. Get quiet. Turn off the noise. Shut the world out and wait on your God. Empty your heart and your mind of distracting thoughts. Focus your heart and mind in God and ask Him to rule over them.

“The greatest blessing connected with stillness is that we can hear eternity; we can hear the voice of the Eternal One as He speaks to our conscience,” Ole Hallesby, Norwegian theologian, said.

Be still in the presence of the Lord and know that He is God. — Psalm 46:10
