Beloved, why do you worry?

“Therefore I tell you:   Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?  Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?  Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying?  And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labour or spin thread.  Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was adorned like one of these.  If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you — you of little faith?  So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat? ’ or ‘What will we drink? ’ or ‘What will we wear?’  For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”

Matthew 6:25‭-‬32

We’re almost at the end of 2020;  a time of the year when many begin to strategically plan for the next year. A time when we get into the “new year, new goals” mode. This time of the year often brings a mix of anticipation and excitement — a sense of not knowing exactly what lies ahead but an eagerness to get there, nonetheless.

But here we are begging the year 2020 to end well and the year 2021 to be good to us. Let’s be honest, we had a rough year! Many of us experienced loss, pain, heartbreak and so much more. Some, like myself, experienced mental health breakdowns, panic attacks and so much more. This year took a toll on everyone right across the board.

And you know what? Acknowledging your hard times and the trauma they brought is not a sin. You don’t have to toss your emotions aside or shove them under the carpet. Many will say that talking about our painful experiences equates to being ungrateful of the good times, but that’s far from the truth. A lot of good happened in 2020,  but a lot of bad happened too.

As I am writing this devotional to you, my heart is filled with anxiety, and I need God’s reassurance. But why am I worrying? Why are you worrying? Don’t we have a good Father that knows all things? We don’t have to worry because God already knows the future and all that we will need. God says, “Do not worry, for which of you can add one moment to your lifespan by worrying?” Let your worry and anxiety turn you to God. He already knows all that will happen. You can trust God with the unknown and experience the beauty of His peace today.
