Don’t get caught in the comparison trap

Be reminded this morning to run with perseverance the race marked out for you – Hebrews 12:1.

As you journey through this life, remember to keep your eyes on God; on the path He has set before you, and on what He is actually doing in and through you.

Don’t get distracted by what everyone else is doing. Instead, set your heart and mind to run the race marked out for you. The moment we start to focus on other people and their journey is the moment we become stressed out and burdened by what other people are doing. Your journey will not look like theirs and vice versa.

Run the race cut out for you, and “stay in your lane!” Refrain from comparing yourself to others. It may seem as though everyone else is doing way better than you, but don’t get fixated on that—the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. The truth is that you really just need to stay true to who you are.

Beloved, fix your eyes on God and on yourself. Do not concentrate on how other people are doing. Do not subject yourself to the cruel nihilism of comparison, because at the end of the day, that’s what comparison ends up being — nihilism. We walk around thinking we’re better than others, or that they’re better than us—but are we really better than anyone? We are all just fallen creatures, trying to live a life that’s pleasing in the sight of the Lord.

Everyone has their own journeys with God, so don’t get too caught up with people’s life. When other people are achieving more than you or are more successful than you, it’s easy to react and try to replicate that person’s success. But what we often fail to realize is that that person is doing what’s best for them, and what’s best for them is usually not what’s best for us. The importance isn’t in doing what works for another person, but being obedient to God by doing your very best with what He gave you.

Run the race marked out for you, and don’t get caught in the comparison trap.
