Overcome the fear that fights your potential to be great.
For many, it’s the terror of failing. While for others, it’s that thought that they will never be good at anything.
The Types
According to an article written by Dr. Karl Albrecht Ph.D. posted on Psychology Today, there are 5 fears that are common among humans.
#1 – Extinction
Extinction is the dread of annihilation. The term ‘ceasing to exist’ is a more fundamental way to express this fear than just calling it “fear of death.” The idea of no longer being around causes anxiety.
#2 – Mutilation
Mutilation is the horror of losing any part of your bodily structure. The fear of mutilation captures the thought of having the body’s boundaries invaded. The thought of losing the integrity of any organ, body part, or natural function generates this fear. Anxiety about animals, such as bugs, spiders, snakes, and other creepy things also arises from fear of mutilation.
#3 – Loss of Autonomy
Loss of Autonomy justifies being immobilized, paralyzed, restricted, or otherwise controlled by circumstances beyond your control. In physical form, it is commonly manifested as claustrophobia. It also extends to our social interactions and relationships.
#4 – Separation
Separation refers to abandonment, rejection, and loss of connection. You fear becoming irrelevant on social media or among your group of friends.
#5 – Ego-death
Ego-death is the fear of humiliation or shame.
Fighting Your Fear
You must conquer restrictive fears before you can be great at whatever you set out to do. Fear is an anxious feeling, caused by your anticipation of some imagined event or experience.
The Breakdown
The key words in this definition are “FEELING” and “IMAGINED”. These words imply that what you are afraid of is intangible. They are intangible because they are perceived notions that you have conjured up in your minds. You possess the power to control your thoughts and your actions. Your feelings and perceived experiences can be replaced with positive thoughts and emotions. You must affirm daily what you believe in.
An Example
Your days can begin with you declaring that: “today I will complete whatever task is on my to do list to later accomplish that goal that I have set.” What a mouthful. You can command your mornings and command the outcome of your days. By affirming positive thoughts and converting these thoughts to actions, day by day you will be closer to accomplishing your goals. Through affirmation you will be great!
Many persons scoff at the cliché term “fake it until you make it”. However, according to Maxwell Maltz, author of the self-help book Psycho-Cybernetics, it takes twenty-one days to break a habit. If for twenty-one days you affirm and act positively, the possibilities of the things you will achieve are endless.
My charge to you as you end this article, is to command your days and act accordingly. With hard work and persistence you will rise up, combat fear, and claim your ability to be great.
