Forgiveness: A lifestyle

How do we get better at something? We have to practice because practice makes perfect! If forgiving is something you want to get better at, it has to be something you practice daily. To get better at playing the piano, you have to practice. To get better at singing, you have to practice. To get better at drawing, you have to practice. To get better at anything, you have to practice and do it more and more.

I think it is the same with forgiveness. The more you practice, the better you get at it. And if you practice forgiving the small things – the little irritations – then I am sure that you would be more ready to forgive when big hurts come along. Then you can walk away from the hurt with barely a scratch on you. You will be able to always be living in freedom and your blessings pipe will be flowing all times. This is how God wants you to live, and He can empower you to forgive instantly, without a second thought about it. He wants you to live with a constant openness towards forgiveness, equipped to both receive it and offer it, that unforgiveness would no longer have space in your heart.

Forgiveness is a lifestyle you must practice every day. Why? Because unforgiveness can block your blessings and breakthroughs, your health depends on forgiveness, and you need God’s forgiveness. Forgiveness is not just something you do one time. You need it every day of your life. You’ve got to ask for forgiveness. You’ve got to accept forgiveness from God and from others. And you’ve got to offer forgiveness. Start by forgiving the little irritations and it will get much easier for you to forgive the bigger ones!

Want your blessings and breakthrough pipe to always be flowing? Then forgive, forgive, and forgive. Actually, how often does Jesus say we are to forgive? Up to seventy multiplied by seven (Matthew 18: 21-22). Forgiveness should be given as long as it is needed and sought after. You and I are never to come to the point of refusing forgiveness sincerely asked for. Our mercy must be just as unlimited as that of God!
