Fruit of the Spirit: Faithfulness

When we try to describe someone who is faithful, we use words such as reliable, steadfast, and unwavering. The word faithful is used of someone who has a firm and constant devotion to something or someone. This person is always faithful to their duty. Could you be described as a faithful person?

Faithfulness affects every relationship we have. In Galatians 5:22 it is listed as a gift that we receive from God. When we receive Christ as Lord, the Holy Spirit indwells us and brings the blessing of faithfulness. The fullness of this blessing depends on walking with God and yielding to His Spirit. We should be faithful to read and abide by God’s Word and to seek the Lord in prayer (Psalm 1:1-2Ephesians 6:18). We should be faithful in duty, friendships and our marriages. We should be faithful with the “little things” before God can entrust us with the “bigger things.” We should be faithful with the talents, finances and resources he has given to us. We should be faithful with all that we have, in all circumstances, because they have been given to us to bring glory to the Lord.

There was a man in the parable of the talents who was going on a long trip and needed his servants to take care of his property while he was gone. To the first he gave five talents, to the second he gave two, and to the third, he gave one. The first and second invested their talents in money and earned more. The third man could have also increased his money, but instead, he dug a hole and hid it. The master returns expecting a great report from his servants. The first and second were praised because they did well with what they were given. The master was, however, very angry with the third man that hid his one talent. The master took his one talent away from him and gave it to the man who had ten talents, and the one talent man was punished because he had not properly used the talent he had been given.

What can we learn from this parable? God expects us to be faithful with whatever He has given us. He will one day return, and we all have to report to Him about whether or not we were faithful with what was entrusted to us. We need to be faithful with whatever “talent” God has given us. It might be money or ability. If we are faithful, He will increase it so that our lives will glorify Him. Let it not be that when the Son of Man comes He finds unfaithful people in the earth.

We all need the faithfulness of the Holy Spirit worked into us to help us keep faithful to God. Apart from Him, we would not know what faithfulness is because faithfulness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Take a second to examine your life and ask yourself, am I being faithful to God by being faithful with the things and people he has given to me?
