Are you letting your circumstances steal your joy? What do you see when you look around? Are you growing tired and frustrated because all you see are goals or dreams that don’t materialize? Maybe you’re feeling discontented and preoccupied with the things you don’t have. You may even find yourself complaining a lot or filled with anxiety. If yes, these are all signs that there’s need for you fix your gaze again.
Today, I want you to intentionally choose to give God thanks. The mere fact that you got out of bed and are breathing is enough reason to be grateful. This may sound cliche, but it is true. Walk around your house and make a list of everything you own. Go outside, look around, and add to the list of things you are grateful for. Hasn’t the Lord been good?
It isn’t easy to show gratitude in every situation, but you can train your soul to do it because it is God’s will for you. Gratitude and thanksgiving are the accents of heaven so give thanks always. Fight against complaining and murmuring because they are the accents of hell. Your thanks isn’t based on your present circumstances, it is based on the joy to come. Let this joy that is to come fuel your thankful endurance. Stir your soul and choose to give thanks despite the horrors you may be faced with.
Look at Jesus; he was broken but thankful. His burden in his body and soul would exceed every humanly conceivable measure, and yet he took the bread that represented his breakable body and gave thanks. Jesus gave thanks to God the Father – the Father who would forsake him on the cross. Jesus gave thanks while trusting, believing, and hoping in the eternal joy set before Him.
It may be hard to see past your struggles right now, but it is possible. Ask God to help you work through your desires that are at war in you. He is your high priest and he can sympathize with you.
