Character is one of the most important assets we have because it is how we present ourselves to the world. It is what defines how we see ourselves, how others see us, and the decisions we make. Our morality is what makes us human and is an important character trait for all of us. Having certain morals is what separates and groups humans together in almost all aspects, such as which activities we choose to partake in, who we support in leadership roles, and even who we choose to align ourselves with.

We can portray ourselves any way that we desire, but if we try to hide pieces of our character, it is important to understand that our fruit will speak for us. In Proverbs 10:9, it says, “People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed.” To me, this said that, if we walk with integrity, we walk in peace because we have no reason to worry about exposure, for we are already living open and honest lives. It also says that what we do to cover up the corrupt things we may be doing in secret is futile because our true intentions will be revealed.

Galatians 6:7 says that we cannot mock God and that, even if we are able to deceive others, God will not be deceived. Our motives will always be made manifest and we will eventually reap what we sow.

Take the time to sit with God and reflect on your character with an open heart. Ask God to reveal the parts of you that may be filled with ulterior motives or ungodly characteristics. Ask Him to purify and refine you, removing what is not pleasing in His sight. The process may be gruelling, but God is ready and waiting for your call.

It is worth it to sow the hard work now and to submit to the process, so that you can reap the benefits of being whole, integral, and righteous, bearing fruit that is pleasing to the Lord.
