Scripture: “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Psalm 16:11
Reflection:
Like the prodigal son who wandered, in hopes of finding life and joy away from home. O, how he was graciously led back home—into the presence of his father where he found life and joy in abundance. We oftentimes are like the prodigal son; wandering away from home in search of life, joy and pleasures outside of God. We go looking for these things and find none because Jesus is the way, He is life and apart from Him, we can find nothing that’s long-lasting and good.
God promises to make known to us the path of life—Jesus, He is the way and He is life, and by Him and through Him God will lead us back to Himself. When we have lost our way and are far gone, God will gently lead us to His heart and in His presence again. This world and all it has can never truly satisfy, and it will never bring true pleasure. All those fasts and vigils and stakes and crosses are only a façade. True satisfaction and pleasures forevermore are found at the right hand of God, not in separation from Him.
This gift of life that God will show us and lead us on; it is something to be enjoyed by every believer both now and in eternity. Have full confidence, brethren, that this life with God – both now and forevermore – will be marked by the highest and best of pleasures. Nothing can be compared to it, for this is the kind of life lived above shallow entertainments and excitement.
Even when you can’t see it or believe it, stay in this path of life that God has shown you. Sorrow may well be your lot in this life, for you have been told that in this world you will suffer trials and difficulties, but you must be of good cheer, for you have God’s indwelling Holy Spirit. And as you focus your heart and mind on the loveliness of our risen Saviour, you shall receive His fullness of joy, love and His peace – not only in the world to come but every day of your earthly life.
