What is self-discipline and what does it have to do with me?

Self-discipline is the ability to push yourself forward, stay motivated, and take action, regardless of how you’re feeling, physically or emotionally. You show it when you intentionally choose to pursue something better for yourself, and you do it in spite of factors like distractions, hard work, or unfavourable odds.

What does it have to do with the Christian? In order to engage in the spiritual disciplines, we as Christians must become self-disciplined people!

When we hear the term self-discipline, we think of something that’s unpleasant and difficult to attain. Though it will take effort & sacrifice, it is not difficult to attain. If we are to get ahead in life and properly do the things the Lord has called us to, then we must develop self-discipline. Self-discipline is like a muscle: the more you work on developing it and using it, the stronger it will become.

The truth is, a lack of self-discipline is at the root of many of the issues we face in our lives. Work hard at being a disciplined person and maybe you’ll get different results this time around. It’s hard work, but like it or not, discipline is essential for godliness. And godliness is essential because eternity is certain. There are no shortcuts, no easy, effortless ways to godliness. But if you have fixed your hope on the living God who is the Savior, can you do anything less than discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness?

Discipline is the path we must take to attain these things. Today, let’s aim at building that self-discipline muscle.
