We are called to live lives that are holy and set apart, but what does that even mean? 1 Peter 1:16 says, “Be holy, for I am holy,” and 2 Corinthians 6:17 says, “Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the LORD. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you.”
We are called to separate ourselves from the world around us. From the day you said yes to God you have become His temple on the earth, occupying His Holy Spirit. God calls us to live in freedom from sin and the law and to lead holy lives. He calls us to be an example to those around us, not live as they do. Because of what Christ has done for us, this is how we should live in response—holy and set apart like people who have been redeemed. Light and darkness cannot be in fellowship. Christ and Satan cannot work together. We are God’s temples on earth since His Spirit lives in us. That’s why we must separate ourselves from the things of this world is opposed to God.
God does say that He is coming back for a bride that is spotless and without blemish (Ephesians 5:27). To be without spot and blemish, we must seek to live lives that are holy and set apart. We have to first submit ourselves to the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, and as we are being pruned, we live out this truth daily. The reference to blemishes is not about physical appearance, but about God’s people being pure before Him. To be holy is to be set apart. To be “without blemish” is to be without a mark.
Be careful how you live. Choose wisdom rather than living like the world. In other words, step out from the crowd and be set apart for God! Live a life that will show people that there is a God. Live a life that will provoke your neighbour until they turn to God.
What can you do to ensure that you are living a life that is set apart for God?
