Sit in the discomfort with God

Imagine what it would be like if we allowed ourselves to sit in discomfort with God. What would come of us if we didn’t try to run away from our pain, and instead, opened up our whole heart to the one who is fully equipped to help? Consider what would happen if we actually tarried in His presence instead of turning to other means for a temporary fix.

What if we didn’t try to eat our pain away or binge-watch a Netflix series just to avoid our hard emotions? Think of the possibilities of opting out of finding other ways to medicate our pain and actually bringing them to God? What would happen if we actually accepted God’s invitation to take our weary souls to Him? Oh the difference sitting in the discomfort with God would make.

Life, as it is right now, is pretty tough, and many are experiencing wave after wave of discomfort. Individuals are finding themselves in situations that are soul-crushing and burdensome. They are walking around with broken hearts, not knowing what to do. Being in this position can sometimes feel scary, especially when you can’t make sense of what’s happening in and around you. But God knows all of what’s happening in you and He knows exactly what you need – read Psalm 139. God knows our thoughts even before we say them. So what if we just stayed in the discomfort with Him, and let Him help us? Wouldn’t that be a good thing? To be in the care of the one who knows us best?

Those pieces of your life that are falling to the ground right now, He knows how to put them back together perfectly. God is capable of taking the broken things in your life and restoring them. Today, I want to remind you of some of God’s promises to you. In your quiet time, sit and meditate on them. Sit in the discomfort with God.

Promises:

  1. God knows you best & He knows what you need: Psalm 139:1-18. The all-knowing God knows you. He has personal knowledge of you and knows even the most everyday things. Nothing about you is hidden from God. Today, if you are hurting, know that He knows exactly what you need. Look to God in this moment. You can be confident in the love and care of God your Father. His constant knowledge of us is a comfort to the brokenhearted and weary souls.
  1. He comforts his children: In the book of Matthew, God encourages us to come to Him with our troubles. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28. Rest is promised to the one who goes to God with their troubles. God is a good father—and like any good father, He wants to comfort His children. By going to God with your heartbreak and pain, we open up ourselves to abundant peace that only He can provide. Will you accept God’s invitation?
  1. He gives perfect peace like no other. “You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You…” Isaiah 26:3. This is a wonderful promise: perfect peace. We can be kept in a place of perfect peace. When hell is raging, we can experience perfect peace. When we keep our minds stayed – settled upon, established upon – the Lord Himself, then we can be kept in this perfect peace. How is your mind right now? Is it filled with anxious thoughts? Begin to talk to the Lord about His perfect peace.
  1. He brings healing. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3. Sometimes it seems as though our pain will crush us, but God wants to draw near with healing. He wants to draw near during your heartbreak. He wants to bind up your wounds if you’ll let Him. Lean in and lean on God. He desires to stand with you in these hard times – make room for Him!

Open up your heart and put away the other distractions. Accept God’s invitation and take your weary soul to Him. Take your pain and uncertainty to Him. Instead of turning to other means that may give temporary relief, run to God. Choose to no longer search for other things to fill the void – only God can do it. Turning to every other thing but God does not actually take care of that itch in your heart, it only makes it worse.

Prayer:

God, here I am. No more running. Here I am with my heart open and ready to fully surrender. Draw near to me with tenderness. Draw near to me with healing. Draw near to me with comfort. Amen.
