Looking out over the massive crowds that have come to see Him, Jesus is filled with compassion for the people. He sees that they are harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. This is not only an expression of care for the people. In response to this compassion for the people, Jesus turns to His followers and says, “The harvest truly is plentiful, the labourers are few. Therefore, pray the Lord of the Harvest to send out labourers into His harvest” Matthew 9:37-38.
Evil roams the streets in this age, so many may say that people really don’t need Jesus. However, I believe that people need Jesus, and they are ready to believe in Him and be welcomed into the kingdom of heaven. As the Great Shepherd, Jesus understands that this is their greatest need, hence the reason why He said: “The harvest is plentiful”. People need peace, joy, and the hope of an eternal home with the Father, and our job is to pray as Jesus commands.
Our job is to pray that the Lord of the harvest would send labourers into the field—and as we pray, we should make ourselves ready to go because we are all commanded to go. The souls who are ready to receive the truth are very numerous, but the labourers are few. The good of this harvest can go to waste if there are no labourers to take advantage of the bounty. This is a warning for us. If we don’t seize opportunities to meet human needs and bring people into the kingdom, what a waste that would be.
Pray that God would compel workers to reap His harvest. This is a prayer we must pray, but we can only pray it honestly if we pray with an ear open to hearing Him tell us, “You go reap the harvest.”
Are you ready to go? God commands us to pray, so I am praying that the Lord would compel you to go. And as I pray, I am keeping an ear open to hear Him tell me, “You go.” I pray that the Lord of the harvest would awaken His bride because we are needed in the field. It is time for the anointed power-filled ministries and ministers to arise and go reap the harvest.
