The Waiting: When God Says Wait

Psalm 27:14

Aren’t you tired of hearing the word ‘wait’?  Like seriously, when you hear the word ‘wait’ what comes to mind? I’ve had to wait on God for many things throughout my life, and I can honestly say that at one point I saw waiting as punishment. I mean, I didn’t always go to God with a long list; I barely asked Him for much, so why would He tell me to wait?

Times of waiting for the Lord has taught me so much and I would like to share two points with you:

  1. We don’t know what’s best for us, God does! God knows and wants the best for us 100% of the time, so we must learn to trust Him and not lean our own understanding, because He has our best interest in mind. We don’t have the wisdom to recognize that He has greater purposes for us in life! So when He says wait, it is not to punish us for something we did in the past. He is not asking us to wait because of His inability to provide. He is not asking us to wait because He does not love us. He is not asking us to wait because He has no clue what He is doing. When He does ask us to wait it is because He knows what’s best, and we just have to trust that He does. He knows just what we need, and He will lead us to green pastures.
  2. When God says wait, He wants to ensure that the conditions are perfect. When God does ask us to wait, many times it’s because the timing isn’t right. You see, God has a bird’s-eye view, and His timing is perfect, even though we oftentimes see it as Him being late. God wants us to receive His best in every season in life, so He is going to ensure that the conditions are perfect. He’s going to ensure that you are in the right place at the right time and that you are equipped to handle what you are asking for. I can guarantee you that if God should give you a thing that you aren’t ready for, you would mishandle it!

There is always a purpose behind waiting. Gods’ timetable is much different than ours. Waiting teaches us to let God do His work and trust that He knows how to do it well. Oftentimes we only want God’s blessing but aren’t willing to wait on His timing. Sometimes there are lessons to learn and we have to wait because we aren’t ready for what it is God wants to bless us with.

If you are in a season of waiting, I pray that you would see it as a blessing rather than a punishment. Be thankful for this season of life, because I am sure God has taught you a lot and will continue to. I am praying and hoping it won’t be a 24-year wait, but even if it is, I have no doubt you will look back and see God’s hand in it all. So my dear, “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He will strengthen your heart.” – Psalm 27:14

As you consider your season of waiting right now, what is it that you are waiting for? Are you trusting God in your waiting? How can you tell?
