Woman or Wife #3 – Is your heart ready for marriage?

woman or wife the anointed writer

My heart is hurting for single women who desire marriage. I fear that many of them have no clue what it takes to actually prepare for the journey. They focus on what they require financially, what will look good aesthetically or what will be pleasing traditionally. Very few have a heart for service or selflessness and it’s more about the woman’s wants than needs.

Marriage – Much More than Money

The enemy will always thwart the areas where there is the most influence. Currently, one of those areas is marriage, dating and relationships. I look around on social media and all I see are women placing their value on material things such as a good trip, nice clothes, nice outings, money, a viral proposal or whatever they place value on that the man can buy. There is much more going on than the rent. Whenever I talk about this someone always cries out: “I want it all!”. Yes, you can have it all but ALL doesn’t always come all at once. And, understand that ALL can easily become nothing; life is unpredictable. Don’t assess the potential of your relationship solely on the basis of provision. God is the ultimate provider and, oftentimes women place value on the material while overlooking the heart, character and purpose of the person they want to spend forever with.

Is your heart ready for marriage?

What does a ready heart look like and why does the heart matter so much in marriage?

The word “heart” occurs over one thousand times in the bible and takes on many definitions and representations. The heart denotes a person’s centre for both physical and emotional-intellectual-moral activities. Essentially, the heart is the beating chest organ protected by the rib cage. But, in the emotional-intellectual-moral sense, the heart centres and drives the rest of the body. An unhealthy heart makes an unhealthy body. Impure hearts fuel impure actions. So, if your heart is not clear and ready for marriage, you should postpone the wedding. Call off the courtship because you need more time to prepare.

A ready heart is:

  • Focused on God and the things of God
  • Not materialistic
  • Sees the bigger purpose of marriage
  • Knows when to enter into courtships
  • Keeps no record of wrong
  • Is guarded
  • Seeking after God
  • Doesn’t settle for less than God’s best
  • Drenched in the spirit of God

Many modern, young Christians don’t understand the weight of marriage. Surrendered marriages with Godly purpose will have challenges. And I don’t mean just the ‘small’ challenges like a little miscommunication or misunderstanding. I am referring to deep, intense, spiritual warfare. The kind that will cause you to question if you made the right decisions or acted prematurely in your relationship prior to marriage. How would you react to a continuous spiritual onslaught in your marriage? Ephesians 6:12 tells you who you are truly fighting against. When your heart is not ready you can barely navigate these seasons.

Woman or Wife

So, I present this question to you: Is your heart ready for marriage?

When you are making the transition from woman to wife, it is important that you check all the boxes. Can the readiness of the heart be checked? Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. You should guard your heart above all else for everything you do flows from it. You cannot have a successful marriage without a ready heart and being a wife will be difficult without one. Will you be willing to sacrifice the things of the world to prepare your heart for Godly marriage? Think about it and let’s talk.

  1. I think I’m self aware enough to know that at this time, I am not ready for marriage. The mere fact that i go back and forth with the thought and desire is proof enough. I am also aware that God is working on pruning, delivering and healing me, more so for His purpose and not just for marriage. And I am satisfied with that.
