It has been a while since I have shared in my Transparency Series. If you are new to this blog and you are unfamiliar with my transparency series; it is where I openly share about specific struggles and deliverance points in my walk with God. This post is inspired by a sermon I heard at my home church. The sermon demonstrated how God’s grace, love and mercy has washed away all our sins. No matter how graphic our pasts may be.
Context
For a while now I have been feeling a sense of rejection from my home church. No one had directly done me wrong and there was nothing wrong with the church. However, my name was dragged through the mud for a situation that had nothing to do with me. I didn’t feel like I belong and there was a lingering feeling of being misunderstood. For many Sundays, I sat in church uncomfortably thinking about how members (music ministers, praise & worship leaders, youth workers, prayer warriors… you . name it) could act in such disappointing ways and continue to do the work of the Lord with no remorse.
The Sermon
The sermon spoke to me because my past is not so grand when you think about it. I was one of the grimiest persons to walk this earth. Spiritually I was grotesque. There was nothing beautiful about the way I lived my life and how I saw myself. I disrespected God and cursed out Christians because I wanted nothing to do with God & the church. I shared with one of the young persons in my circle that I was so far away from God that I thought he could never find me. That’s how bad it was.
At one point in the sermon, the preacher highlighted how our pasts can try to cripple us in our walk with God. God has positioned us in places that make us uncomfortable because we believe that we are unworthy. One of the points that stood out to me was: God has positioned some of us, even BEFORE He’s through fixing us.
You are Free from the Tongues of Men
The truth is that while you may feel uncomfortable because you feel unworthy; persons are uncomfortable because you are in position and they think you are unworthy based on your past. I find that much church hurt begins here. It begins where persons are misunderstood and continues where persons fail to understand how the blood of Jesus connects us to the Commonwealth of Israel. People criticize what they don’t understand. In the church – and I find myself in this category – there are many whose call challenges doctrinal traditions. And these individuals are most times from a past that would cause the timid to hang their heads in shame. What the enemy wants to do to these individuals is to use flawed individuals in the church to try to derail them from their God-given purpose.
You are free from the tongues of men
I want to encourage you to walk boldly into what God has called you to do. You need to understand who you are in Christ, as well as the mandate He has given to you to fulfil. There is no past that God’s blood cannot wash clean. Your past, geographical location or flaws do not define you. You are God’s child and you are chosen. People will talk but forgive them anyway. You are free from the tongues of men.
